Growing community in Chicago

About the Buryat People

The Buryats are a Mongolic ethnic group native to Siberia, primarily around Lake Baikal in Russia. Their culture is deeply rooted in nomadic traditions, respect for nature, and strong family and community values.

Buryat heritage blends ancient shamanistic beliefs with Tibetan Buddhism, creating a unique spiritual and cultural identity. Traditional practices include throat singing, folk dances, storytelling, and seasonal celebrations such as Sagaalgan (Lunar New Year).

Our Community in Chicago

Buryat Heritage Chicago brings together families and individuals who share a connection to Buryat and Mongolian culture. What started as small gatherings has grown into a strong and welcoming community.

Today, we organize cultural events, educational programs, and social activities that help preserve traditions while building meaningful connections across generations.

Culture & Traditions

Our community celebrates traditional music, dance, clothing, and cuisine. Events often include live performances, community meals, and activities for children and families.

We focus on passing cultural knowledge to younger generations so that traditions remain alive and relevant in a modern environment.

History & Roots

The Buryat people have a long history connected to the Mongol Empire and the broader Central Asian steppe culture. Over centuries, they developed a distinct identity shaped by geography, migration, and cultural exchange.

Despite modern changes and global movement, Buryats continue to maintain their language, customs, and sense of identity both in their homeland and in communities around the world.
